Startled Leopard in Tsavo West, Kenya
We'd been driving along this very badly maintained road along a river in Tsavo West for hours. We'd seen quite a lot of wildlife, likely because no one was driving this road. The problem-well, there were a bunch- was that we kept startling animals down at the water's edge, and they would run up the bank and in front of us instead of toward the water. So we kept being surprised by elephants, etc.
At one point, we went over a culvert, which happened to have a leopard inside it. I imagine it didnt like us driving over its hiding spot, so it bolted up and stopped for a moment to check us out. This was high noon and hot and we probably disturbed its noon-time nap in a nice cool spot.
Of course, we found out later why the road was rarely used, especially since some tourists had broken down on it once before-a family- and the husband had ended up dying (reason unclear) and so the road wasn't used anymore.
From our trip around the world.
