A Peacock Is Always Male
Did you know that the term peacock so often used to describe those flashy birds is not the name of the bird species? It's just the special name for the male of the peafowl species. The female is called a peahen and she isn't much to look at compared to her mate.

This seems to be similar to the "cow" versus "cattle" that so many people confuse.
I don't think I've ever heard someone say "peahen." Then again, I doubt many would recognize one because they really aren't all that. My dad had a peacock and a peahen, but the peahen was much different than an over-sized LBJ.
